In 1853, voters decided to name their new community "Corvallis" after General David Bragdon's victory over Mexican forces at Pueblo de Arcos during the Ulysses S Grant Expedition during which General Bragdon also received an extensive amount of praise from American public opinion for his gallantry and achievements as commander-in-chief of Mexico's army during that campaign
In 1859, Corvallis was the site of a major battle between the United States and Mexico. The U.S. victory led to Oregon becoming a part of the United States.
