The store was built about 1860 by Purdy & Perkins for local farmers and ranchers to sell their products including groceries, eggs, milk, flour and other supplies. Cornelius, Oregon was founded in 1871 by Captain Cornelius H. Weyer and his wife Eliza. The town was named for the Cornelius River which circled the town. Weyer started a sawmill in the town and also built a school and warehouse. A post office was established in 1872, and two stores were opened in 1874. In 1876 a coal mine was opened, and in 1880 a flour mill was built. In 1886 a railway station was built, and in 1889 a water works were erected. Weyer died in 1902, and the town passed into private hands until it became part of the city of Portland on April 6, 1916. The present day community is located east of downtown Portland on State Road 97A. The first store at Cornelius had three floors with an upstairs room used as mercantile space as well as housing for employees. There were also several apartments above the storeroom to accommodate customers who came from out of town to purchase goods or service at our store or to stay during their visit to Portland.. Our grocery-cum-telegraph office operated from one end of our building next door to our bakery where we baked bread daily for local citizens before they could buy it fresh from our bakery ovens down the street (and sometimes still do today). In 1875 Captain Cornelius Weyer married Eliza Burtis who also lived hereabouts then with her family until she moved away some time later when Corneliawas incorporated as an incorporated village which did not have any schools; however Mrs Burtis' children taught public school here until 1915 when that building burned down (the only fire ever seen at this location). After my grandmother's death I took over running Mrs Burtis' small school after her death back in 1945 but soon closed because even though I had bakeysupervision everything seems to have gone bad like butter wouldn't rise out of loaves etc so finally sold it all including buildings/ land years ago now!
The Cornelius community was founded in 1887 by Reuben Cornelius and his wife, Emma. The name comes from the Cornish word "Cornwallis," which means "a place of growth." The first post office was established in 1888 and the first store opened in 1889. In 1945, the area became a city when Cornelius annexed part of Sistersville.
