Cornelius, Oregon is a small town in Douglas County, Oregon. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. Cornelius is located on the banks of the Willamette River. Cornelius was founded in 1872 by Captain George A. Smith and his family as a trading post on the edge of what is now known as metropolitan Portland. In 1923, CorneliusPost Office closed because it could not compete with the larger cities in Douglas County. However, it reopened two years later under new management and became an incorporated city in 1933 with a population of 2,500 people. The City of Cornelius has since grown to over 10,000 residents and continues to be one of the fastest-growing towns in Douglas County. The old courthouse which stands today on Main Street served as both the city hall and first court house for Cornelius until 1988 when a new building was completed adjacent to Main Street just east of its original location. The old courthouse has been used as a museum since 1990 and is open every day from 9:00am to 4:00pm except Mondays when it is closed due to weather conditions outside. Cornelius Post Office opened on July 4th 1865 under name "Oregon City". It closed October 12th 1868 due to lack of mail volume but reopened again November 3rd 1870 after being reorganized by Captain John Smeaton who had brought over many letters from Portland which he thought would help improve business at Oregon City Post office which had been struggling for many years prior theretodue primarily to distance issues between Portland and Douglas County Captain George A Smith founded what would become Cornelius in 1872 after spending time travelling through Oregon looking for land that could be developed into housing opportunities for settlers interested in his newly discovered country . In 1923 whenDouglas Countys largest town by size captain George A Smith's successor Augustus Ivey opened up shop at 5226 SW Highway 97A about 15 miles north west of downtownPortland his successors decided that they needed their own town square so they razed most everything south of Market street including any buildings that didn't have an immediate use such as old post office or jail while continuing construction on their new town hall/courthouse located NE corner current 6th Ave & NW corner First St NE still standing

The town of Cornelius, Oregon was founded in 1868 by John A. Cornelius and his brother James. The town was named for the battle of Gettysburg in 1863. The town grew rapidly during the early years, and by 1875 it had a population of 350 people. In 1881, Cornelius became the county seat of Clatsop County.
