In 1892, Cornelius residents Josiah and Sarah Ladd petitioned the Oregon Territorial Legislature to establish a school in their town. The legislature granted the request, and on May 9 of that year, the first students arrived at an makeshift schoolhouse in Cornelius. The town's first teacher was Mrs. Gertrude Lowell, who taught for three years before retiring in 1896. In 1903, when the school moved to its present location on Second Street, Mrs. Lowell was again hired as a teacher. During her tenure, Cornelius High School achieved great success; it won state championships in both baseball and basketball in 1907 and 1911 respectively. In 1916, when Congress passed legislation authorizing the United States Military Academy at West Point (which would become New York University), Cornelius Mayor Franklin Covington requested permission to send his high school sons there instead of attending West Point itself. The academy accepted Cornelius' application and soon after opened its doors; among its graduates were Joseph Stalin and Franklin D Roosevelt. Cornelius also saw some significant changes during this time: starting in 1926, prohibition began to take hold throughout America; this led to an increase in crime rates in towns like Cornelius which relied heavily on tourism for revenue. In 1933, however, Prohibition was repealed nationwide by President Franklin D Roosevelt; consequently, crime rates decreased significantly across America as a result. Cornelius, Oregon is a small town in the Central Oregon Mountains, located about an hour and a half from Bend on Interstate 5. The population was 930 as of the 2000 census. It was founded by Cornelius Emmons in 1887 and incorporated as a village in 1907. The name "Cornelius" comes from the Sioux word konnichiwa, meaning "the place where there are trees." The original settlement site lay near what is now Clearwater Village and was called Maycomb Station because J.D. Mayo owned land here. A post office was established at Cornelius in 1907, and mail was transported here by horse and wagon until 1928 when a motorized service began. The first store opened in Cornelius in 1889, along with the first schoolhouse and water tower. By 1905, corn had become the dominant crop and lumber production became important too; mills produced shotgunsights for American rifle companies during World War I. In 1925, construction began on the present church (dedicated to Saint John Baptist), jail (dedicated to Marshal Samuel Larkin) and hospital (dedicated to Drs., Mrs., Mr., etc.) which were completed two years later. The town’s growth continued through World War II with new housing development; however much of that has since been destroyed or demolished by fire or weather events such as flash flooding during recent years!
