Cornelius, Oregon is a small town located in the Willamette Valley of western Oregon. It was founded in 1871 by J.D. Cornelius and his brothers, George and John Cornelius. The Cornelius family had a large logging business in the area and they also started the first post office in their town. The town became an important stop on the Oregon Trail because it had reliable transportation to the nearby towns of Lewiston and Malheur. Because of its location, Cornelius also grew into a commercial center with many businesses catering to travelers from Portland and Seattle. During World War II, Cornelius helped support the war effort by manufacturing munitions and supplies for the military. After the war, some of the original businesses closed but others continued to grow into new businesses such as a grocery store, clothing store, lumberyard, hotel, restaurant, and printing shop. In recent years, much of what remains in town has been preserved as part of the Cornelia Historic District which encompasses over 100 buildings dating back to 1889.

The first people to come to what is now McMinn County were the Hidatsa and Chinook Indian tribes. They built small villages near what is now Boise and Portland. In 1834, Brigham Young came through the area and founded a small town called Independence on the Snake River near present day Salem. Young named the town after himself because he had been baptized in that spot. The first post office was established in Independence on July 9, 1835. In 1853, gold was discovered in nearby Lassen County and soon thereafter many people from McMinn County started moving to prospect for gold along the Snake River. By 1860 there were over 100 residents living in Independence. When Governor John Cranch appointed Jens Jensen as head of wagon train escort for members of Congress on their trip around California in 1861, Independence became one of several towns along the route - it was not until 1863 when General Crook arrived that all of Independence's citizens joined him at his new camp south of Soda Springs nearpresent day Corvallis (Eugene). When Oregon became an independent state on November 16th, 1859, Cornelius became one of its first places of business – with just 10 residents! The following year saw an influx of miners when a vein of gold was found at Siskiyou Lake about 25 miles east of town – this led to a rapid growth for Cornelius over the next few years as more and more men came downriver searching for wealth beyond our already rich country! In 1865-66 Hurricane Andrew struck Columbia River Valley; some damage done but no loss reported within Cornelius limits; however heavy rains caused extensive flooding which destroyed most homes & businesses within a radius up to 3 miles from river shoreline; total destruction including entire blockhouse & milldam resulting in loss $4000 per house & store single family homes lost 60% or more value compared to pre-storm levels; however community spirit prevailed Despite daunting prospects! This event left many displaced persons behind who would have difficulties returning home during reconstruction time – another legacyofHurricaneAndrew!
