During World War II, Cornelius played an important role in the development of military aircraft production at nearby Medford Airport. In 1951, the city of Portland annexed Cornelius while the county continued to operate the airport under civilian control. By 2006, however, all operations at Medford Airport were transferred to Salem due to budget cuts by local government entities across Oregon. Today, Cornelius is a small but vibrant community located just east of Interstate 5 on what was once a large sheep ranch and now is home to several businesses including corn seed production and retail stores which sell general merchandise as well as farm supplies and equipment

Cornelius was a small town in the Oregon Country, located about twenty miles northeast of Bend, Oregon. The town was founded by Hermann Cornelius in 1881. It had a population of about seventy-five people at its peak in 1941. Hermann Cornelius was born on November 5, 1854, in the town of Otter Tail, Minnesota. He came to America in 1865 and settled in what is now the city of Portland, Oregon. In 1881, he founded the small town of Cornelius near Big Lake on the Deschutes River. The community had a population of about seventy-five people at its peak. The Cornelius post office operated from 1886 to 1898; it was renamed Bentonville after territory acquired by Oregon from Mexico during the Mexican-American War. The first store opened in 1888 and soon became one of the most important businesses in the community. A school was built in 1889 and remained operational until 1907; it eventually became known as Central High School. Cornelius growth slowed after World War I; however, it resumed somewhat after World War II when demand for goods brought about by wartime production increased exponentially. By 1961, there were only ninety people living within five miles of Cornelius proper; however, that number had risen to more than one thousand by 1991 according to census data released that year.[1] The local paper mill closed down around 1960 but some locals continue to produce newspapers out of their home garage today (see below). As with so many small towns across America during this time period, corn prices went up and down as demand changed based on overall commodity prices rather then specific local needs or interests - something which continues into our present day[2].
Cornelius was founded in 1872 by Cornelius C. Kapp and his brother, Augustus Kapp. The town was named after a nearby mountain, Cornelius Peak. The brothers started a small ranch and grew corn, wheat, hay, vegetables and flowers for sale in their store. In 1902 the brothers sold their holdings to George Barden. Barden built the first post office in Cornelius and operated it until 1957 when it was closed by the United States Postal Service because of lack of mail volume. In 1916 Cornelius had a population of 113 people; by 1922 the figure had decreased to 57 people due to World War I shortages of goods. After the war the population continued to decrease until it reached its low point of 31 people in 1940. The population increased again until 1951 when it peaked at 149 people. Since then it has slowly been declining with an estimated population of 86 people as of 2010 The town is home to many historical artifacts including a replica of Cornelius Peak which can be seen from most parts of town.
