Cornelius, Oregon is a small town located in the Wallowa County region of eastern Oregon. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bend, OR Micropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as Cornelius was first settled by Chinamen in 1847. A post office was established at Cornelius in 1851, and the town began to grow rapidly around this time. By 1870, Cornelius had over 100 residents and was one of the most important commercial centers in Wallowa County. Although it declined during the Great Depression, Cornelius bounced back after World War II with growth in agriculture and industry. In recent years, however, some community changes have occurred which may impact its future: landownership has changed dramatically since 1980; local government has been consolidating into two or three townships; and housing prices have increased significantly within a radius of about 15 miles (24 kilometers).

Cornelius was founded in 1854 by Danish immigrants, John Christensen and his wife Anne. The town grew rapidly due to the discovery of oil and gas near the site in 1867. By 1870, Cornelius had a population of over 500 people. In 1871, Cornelius became the first incorporated city in Oregon. The economy of Cornelius was based on production of crude oil and gas from nearby wells and on agriculture. By the late 1800s, however, industry had replaced agriculture as the town’s mainstay. growth stopped during World War I because of lack of resources; however, it resumed after the war when new found oil reserves were discovered. In 1969, Congress passed the National Historic Preservation Act Amendments which provided funds for National Park Service designation for certain areas within Oregon’s Ghost Lake National Recreation Area including Cornelius. The town has experienced rapid growth since then with over 2200 residents now living there. Today, Cornelius is an important cultural center for Eastern Oregon and is home to several museums including the Western Oregon Historical Museum andthe American Folklife Center; as well as a variety of business districts including downtown shopping streets with high-end boutiques and restaurants along them; a central park complex with multiple sports fields; and numerous small villages scattered throughout its neighborhoods
Cornelius was founded in 1851 by Cornelius Dewey. The town was named after Cornelius Dewey, a millionaire who donated the land for the town. The first post office was established in 1853 and the first store opened in 1857. The population of Cornelius grew rapidly during the early years of its development, reaching 1,500 people by 1905. By 1912, the community had grown to 4,000 residents and it became an incorporated municipality in 1916. In 1925, Cornelius adopted a new government form which included a mayor and five councilors. The town experienced rapid growth during World War II as many Japanese Americans moved to Cornelius to work on shipyards or in other related industries. Despite this growth, however, the population of Cornelius declined significantly following the war and only reached 2,500 residents again by 1960. Today, there is very little remaining evidence of early Cornelius culture except for some historical artifacts
