Cornelius, Oregon is a town in Clatsop County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,530 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland metropolitan area. The first white settlers in Cornelius were August Ayer and his family who arrived in 1847. Ayer was the founder of what is now the city of Portland. By 1860, Cornelius had a post office and three churches. In 1862, an act to create Clatsop County was passed by the Oregon General Assembly and Cornelius became one of its townships. In 1895, when it became part of Multnomah County, Cornelius became its capital. On February 14th, 1959 Cornelius voters approved a new school district which unified all schools within its borders into one entity known as "Multnomah School District No." On July 1st of that year Multnomah School District No.'s buildings were dedicated and set up on Main Street just east of town center - becoming one with neighboring towns such as Vancouver and Bend in terms of educational services for their students. Cornelius has continued to thrive as an agricultural community throughout its history with various crops being grown including hay, cottonseed oil (a type of biodiesel), grains (elevated ground corn), potatoes (which are used to make Russian dressing or pierogi), sweet potatoes (which are used to make mashed potato) and appleseed oil until recently; however dairy production has replaced most farm-based production across much of rural northwestern Oregon today due to advances in pasteurization technology over the last few decades. Today there are several small businesses located throughout town that provide local groceries for residents while also providing work opportunities for locals during busy times such as harvest season or during the winter months when local farms closed down due to lack of customers or extenuating circumstances; many residents maintain personal gardens which continue to play an important role in village life despite difficult conditions during planting time & harvesting season
