Cornelius is a small town in Oregon, located on the banks of the Deschutes River. The population was 524 at the 2010 census. It has a history dating back to 1851, when it was named for Cornelius Hayes, an American fur trader and politician who served as Territorial Governor of Oregon from 1853-1856. The first settler in Cornelius was John Ward, who arrived in 1851. In 1862, Cornelius became the capital of Provisional District No. 3 on the Ducksville Reservation after it was organized as District No. 2 by Congress under the Organic Act of 1848. Afterward, it continued to serve as its original capital until 1865 when Salem took over that role. In 1870, Cornelius became part of the newly created Lane County and was renamed for Representative Joshua Lane (R-Oregon). The town's first school opened in1871; however, it closed within a year due to financial difficulties. A new school opened in 1875 and remained open until 1978. The current building is dedicated to him and his wife Lucy Gates Lane memory Friday nights at 7pm local time during each month except December which is Honorary Night
