In November 2012 he ran as an independent candidate against incumbent Mayor Greg Stanton with 36% ofthe vote; however his opponent received more votes than he did total ballots cast (2971 vs 2975). The village gradually grew larger over time, becoming one of the most important villages on the Oregon side of the border during World War II because it served as a gathering point for soldiers coming down from Alberta Province to fight against Japan. In 1949, when Oregon became an independent state, Cornelius remained an integral part of that state government; however, its status decreased following that transition due to lack of resources (although it did become part of Tillamook County). Today, there are no more residents living within reach of Cornelius because it has slowly been shrinking since the early 2000s due to economic factors such as low commodity prices and competition from other towns within twenty miles radius (including Tillamook).
