The first settlers in what is now Cornelius were George Washington Carver and his wife Lucy who arrived from Illinois in 1875. They started a farm where they raised chickens and pigs until 1850 when they decided to move westward into what is now Douglas County to find new land for their families. After landing on the current site of Cornelius on December 16th of that year they erected two small wooden buildings which served as their homes until 1876 when they built larger structures with lumber brought over by wagonloads from nearby Portland. At this point the town consisted of just two houses which were situated close together on either side of a small clearing bisected by a stream (now called State Street). From these humble beginnings the towns growth continued apace with various businesses opening up including an bakery/marchandise store (1887), post office (1912), brewery (1915), carpenter shop (1920), grocery store (1924) and dairy (1930). Cornelius was founded in 1853 by Cornelius W. Smith and his wife, Anna L. Smith. The town was named for General Ulysses S. Grant, who had been president of the United States at the time of its founding. The first store in Cornelius was built on the corner of Main and Second Streets. By 1860, the town had a population of about 50 people and consisted of a few buildings on Main Street and a few more around Fourth Street. In 1865, Cornelius became an incorporated village with a population of about 100 people. By 1870, corn had become the main crop in town, and many businesses were established to service that industry. In 1874, Cornelius residents voted to change their name to Portland after nearby Portland, Oregon (then called Vancouver).
