Cornelia has experienced some growth over the years; most notably during World War II when many local businesses were utilized to make munitions for the war effort. However, economic decline has characterized Cornelia since then; however there are few signs that this will continue anytime soon given recent expansions into neighboring cities such as Gladstone and Medford which have helped support Cornelia's economy overall since they arrived on its doorstep
Cornelius was founded in 1853 by Cornelius J. Goodwin and his wife, Fanny. The town site was donated by General James K. Polk in 1856, and the town name derived from the first settler, Cornelius Goodwin. The first post office opened in 1859, and the first store was built in 1860. In 1865, Cornelius became a city under Oregon Territory law. The city government was organized on March 1, 1865, with A.J. Beaumont as mayor and Wm Halsey as recorder. On July 1st, 1888, Cornelius became a part of Portland County under Oregon Statehood laws.
