A small community of blacksmiths and their families developed around the millrace; they are still remembered today by their trade moniker of Lakotas because of the amount of time they spent tooling up for summer work on the river. The smithy remains can still be seen today next to Interstate 5 just west of Springfield. Cornelius has always been an agricultural town with a significant presence in livestock production; however, it also became increasingly important as a manufacturing center over time due to its proximity to major industry including leather tanning and paper manufacturing fields as well as Portland’s growing shipping interests. In recent years somerowth has occurred in non-agricultural sectors such as retail and professional services although most residents continue to rely heavily on agriculture for both economic stability and identity

Today, Cornelius is a small town with a population of about 50 people who live primarily within its limits and enjoy its unique history and culture. Its proudest moments include becoming part of Oregon and being home to both the Portland Timbers soccer team and America's Cup champion sailing team (the America's Cup has been held here twice).
In 1848, Cornelius was established as the first town in Oregon. The town was named after Captain John Cornelius of the U.S. Custom House at Portland, who had donated land for the settlement. The first store and post office were built in 1849. In 1850, Cornelius also became the capital of Oregon Territory.
