Cornelius is a town in Linn County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,428 at the 2010 census. It was platted in 1887 by Cornelius citizens John and Anna Hixon. The post office was established at Cornelius on July 5, 1886, and the first mail brought by horse to the town from Beaver Valley on July 8 of that year. The town grew rapidly due to agricultural production and trade with nearby valleys. The first store in Cornelius opened in 1895. A sawmill opened in 1898; a flour mill followed in 1899-1901. In 1905, a Swift & Co meatpacking company constructed a plant there; it operated until 1969. Lumbering became an important industry after World War II; Cornelius has been home to two mills since 1951: the Western Lumber Company Mill (now closed) and the Central Lumber Company Mill (closed). An electric Cooperative arrived in 1959; it became part of Pacific Northwest Electric Corporation (PNWEC) in 1971 when PNWEC merged with Portland General Electric Company (PGE). In recent years, tourism has become an important factor for Cornelius; its summer festivals include the Cornfest parade and carnival and its fall events include Pumpkin patch photo contest and corn sales
Cornelius was founded by Cornelius Wright in 1869. The town grew rapidly due to the lumber industry and is now a part of Portland, Oregon.
