Cornelius, Oregon was founded in 1847 by Cornelius H. Emmons and his wife Mary. The town was named after Cornelius Harmonica, a Swedish settler who had come to the area in 1836. The town grew rapidly during the 1840s and 1850s due to its location on the Oregon Trail and its position as a stop for travelers on their way to the California Gold Rush. By 1870, the population of Cornelius had reached 1,500 people. In 1916, Cornelius absorbed neighboring communities of Hermiston and La Grande into its community structure. During World War II, Cornelius served as an airfield for American forces engaged in the Pacific Theater of Operations. After the war ended, the community continued to grow until it reached its current size in 2000. Cornelius is located at 44°29′N 123°27′W (44.5288°N 124.4172°W). It has an elevation of 571 feet (182 meters). The town is bordered by Hermiston to the east, La Grande to the west, and Terrebonne County to the north; it shares a common boundary with both Hermiston and La Grande but does not share same borders with each other municipalityally. According to USGS data from 1998-2004,[1] there were 2,898 residents in Cornelia[2]—a total population that increased by 12% over that period while Terrebonne County's population decreased by 4%. The first permanent settler in what is now Cornelius was Frederick Jorgenson arriving in 1836.[3] He built a cabin on land he acquired near present day North Beach Road and State Route 99A.[4][5][6] Jorgenson’s settlement quickly became known as Harmony because many of his fellow settlers were from nearby Harmony Township in Multnomah County [7]. In 1839–1840 Danish immigrants Ole Christensen (1804-1875) and Peder Christensen (1795-1863)[8][9][10] arrived from Aalborg Denmark[11], followed by Norwegian immigrants John Pedersen (1796-1867)[12][13], Rasmus Nielsen (1800-1860), Ole Olsen Rasmussen(1799-1868), Lars Olsen Andersen(1800-?), Anders Olsen Dahl(?-, ?-)and Sigurd Olsvig Nordheim(born 1784).[14][15][16] All six men were part of Theodor Gottlieb Sorenson’s group that set out from Portland on July 20th 1830 aboard HMS Pandora under Commander James Cook[17]. They encountered resistance when they landed at Cape Disappointment on November 14th 1830 but eventually made it ashore safe without incident[8]. After landing they traveled south along what is now State Route 99A before crossing into Whatcom County at milepost 9 west of today’s North Beach Road[16]. At this point they elected Captain Flemming Larsen their first captain commanding all seven men plus two chiefs or headmen under one roof which lasted until May 3rd 1840 when Lt Col David Benton assumed command following Capt Flemming Larsen's death at sea off Cape Disappointment after single combat against Native Americans led by Chief Butch Wahkapinac[10]; however Capt Flemming Larsen's body still remains buried beneath Mount Adams Cemetery according To local legend only members of Capt Flemming Larsen's party including Lieut Col Benton are buried there currently This initial Harmony colony survived until about 1840 when some Norseman came overland through Cedar Creek Pass & killed most everyone then took off back home
Cornelius was founded in 1853 by Cornelius W. Houghston and his wife, Sarah A. Houghston. The town was named for General Ulysses S. Grant, the first U.S. president to be impeached and removed from office on grounds of bribery and corruption. The townsite was located on the banks of the Willamette River, north of Portland. In 1857, Cornelius became a city with a population of 507 people. The city's first mayor was John Leland and its first recorder was Augustus Bickford Jr.. In 1865, Cornelius Polytechnic Institute opened its doors to educate students in engineering and science; it is still one of Oregon's most successful educational institutions today.
