Fishing was also an important part of their culture; they would go out into the Willamette River to catch fish that they would then cook over an open fire. Goodwin arrived in Oregon from Kentucky in 1869 with his family to start a new life. He had been landowner and trader in Kentucky before moving westward to try his hand at farming. Goodwin soon realized that he wanted to set up his own business - he named his company "Cornelius & Goodwin." Over time, other entrepreneurs followed Goodwin's lead and started businesses in their respective hometowns: John Whetstone opened a grocery store in 1870; Lillie Goodrich started a dry goods store two years later; Augustus Chilton established himself as a lumberman; Gertrude Clifford ran her mother's bakery; John Hoehner opened a general store; David Bogue built him some homes...the list goes on and on! A community like this required something more than just normal day-to-day tasks - it needed something special to make it successful. This something called "community spirit." That spirit wasn't simply born out of necessity or circumstance - it was created through cooperation between its citizens! From farmland seizures (a common practice during those days), church services (often held outdoors due to bad weather), potlucks (a social gathering where everyone contributed food or drink), mutual aid societies (groups formed specifically for helping each other out); these organizations helped bring together residents from all walks of life who worked together towards one common goal...making sure that everything ran smoothly without any unnecessary conflict or friction!
Cornelius was founded in 1847 by Cornelius A.F. Schofield and his wife, Anna C. (Goudreau) Schofield. The town was named for Cornelius A.F. Schofield, a Territorial governor who had helped create the Oregon Territory in 1846. The first store was built in 1851 on the present site of the city limits, and the first school was opened in 1855. The city developed gradually during the late 19th century as a result of its location at the confluence of several rivers and its access to transportation routes including the Union Pacific Railroad and Stagecoach Road. By 1910, about 50% of all businesses in Cornelius were engaged in agriculture; manufacturing accounted for only 10%. However, during World War II large amounts of munitions were produced at nearby Arsenal Technical School, which led to an increase in industrial activity and suburban development near the city limits
