Cornelius, Oregon is home to the largest collection of firearms clothing in the United States. The town was founded in 1887 by George Cornelius and his wife Eliza, who founded a gun store. The store continued to operate until it closed its doors in 1961. Today, the town has a small museum that features firearms clothing from throughout history. The first guns appear in Cornelius on July 3, 1868 when two men named John Bowers and Wm Halsey traveled downriver from Salt Lake City with several revolvers and pistols to purchase supplies for their new West Coast ranch. It is likely that these men were picking up rifles and shotguns from local traders before traveling downriver to buy more heavy weaponry for their expanding rancho. Over time, Cornelius became known as the "Gun Store of Oregon" for its wide variety of firearms clothing products available at its lone store. This inventory included everything from pants and shirts to hats and jackets. In addition to selling Firearms Clothing, George Cornelius also operated a sawmill which produced lumber needed for building handguns and rifles. In 1961, when both George Cornelius' store and his sawmill closed down simultaneously due to lack of customers, many of the weapons garments still in stock at the museum were donated by locals who no longer had access to them. Since then, many other businesses have joined forces with the Museum in order to keep this unique collection alive. today there are over 125 firearms garments displayed inside the old shop while also housed on 5 floors of expanded storage space outside of town limits
