Cornelius is a small town in butte County, Oregon, United States. The population was 3,285 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Eugene–Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Cornelius was Captain John McLoughlin in 1806 when he and his party of HMS Beagle were exploring the Columbia River area. Cornelius had been founded by Captain William Purdy in 1868 as a Mormon outpost on land grants given to him by Brigham Young. Purdy's son-in-law, Major George Armstrong Custer, killed himself here while trying to cross the Bean Creek Crossing on October 26, 1876. A plaque marks the site of Custer's death and offers a $10 million reward for information leading to his killers. In 1886, Cornelius became home to Oregon Agricultural College (OAC), which became one of America's leading universities. OAC continue until 1992 when it merged with UCLA and was renamed University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). Because of its location near two major metropolitan areas—Eugene and Springfield—Cornelius has always been an important agricultural center for central Oregon. The town also manufactures hats, shoes and other consumer goods; glass products; medical supplies; fabricated metal products; plastics; lumber; uranium exploration rights from 1897 until 1934 and now manages energy resources including oil well production According to the 2010 census there are 3,287 people living in Cornelius according to race or ethnicity: 99% white (non-Hispanic), 1% black or African American, 0% Native American/Alaska Native

By 1880, Cornelius had a school, library, movie theater, grocery store, and two churches. In 1903, the town became a city under the name of Portland. The downtown area is home to many famous landmarks such as the Oregon State Capitol Building and Pioneer Hall. It also contains several small businesses that have been around since before Cornelius became a city. One of these businesses is Tom's Hardware where IGA groceries are still sold today! Other popular attractions include the Pioneers Park which features an outdoor amphitheater with games for children as well as a playground and interpretive center; and Sellwood Park which has a variety of activities for adults as well as an open-air tennis court and basketball court! Cornelius is known for its annual pumpkin festival which takes place on October 15th each year! This event is one of the largest spice festivals in Oregon and features various food booths from all over Oregon as well as national sponsorships from Masterchef America and Quiz Show USA! There are also carnival rides、parades、and street fairs throughout the town during this fun-filled event!
Cornelius was founded in 1871 by Cornelius Weld and his brother-in-law, John S. Lilly.The first store was built on the present site of the city in 1872. The town name originated from a misunderstanding caused by two brothers who were driving to the same stop on a logging road and mistook each other for settlers.
