The fortunes of Cornelius have also been mixed with periods of growth followed by periods of decline as well as advances and setbacks throughout its history including becoming one of Northwest Oregon’s most thriving agricultural communities during the late 19th century while at the same time experiencing significant social turmoil caused by World War II oratory proficiency contests among local teenagers that culminated with an Indian massacre on campus that left nearly all students dead or captured (the “Cornelius Incident”). Today, Cornelius remains an important community center with strong ties to agriculture and education along with small businesses and restaurants providing support services within its narrow downtown core where retail opportunities are limited but continue to be developed around important cultural attractions like the Arts District which features several galleries and three theaters as well as various artisans workshops. Cornelius was founded in 1877 by Cornelius C. Hall, a Norwegian immigrant who had arrived in the United States in 1866. Hall and his partners, John H. Rockefeller and Wm. Folsom, developed large tracts of land near the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia Rivers in what is now Oregon. The town of Cornelius grew up around the original business district on Main Street and nearby railroad tracks, which served as its commercial center. In 1902, when Oregon became a state, Cornelius merged with neighboring Burlington (now Salem) to form the new city of Salem. In 1915, Salem annexed part of northeastern Oregon's rural northeast corner to become another annexe for Cornelius; this area today is known as North Portland. The town proper ceased to exist after World War II when it was amalgamated with other towns withinOregon's newly created Multnomah County to form the current city of Portland. However, some elements of Cornelius remain visible today - most notably its downtown area which retains much of its architecture fromHall's time as mayor - while others have been lost or replaced entirely since then.
Cornelius was founded in 1810 by Cornelius Green and his wife, Hannah. The town was named for an early settler, Cornelius de Forest, who had come to the area in 1807. The first store opened in 1811. By 1863, the population of Cornelius had reached 400 people. In 1916, the post office closed but the community continued to function as a small village with a school and general store. The last resident of Cornelius died in 1984.
