After the war, though there has been some growth back to its pre-war level, most residents now work outside of their home towns or are heavily involved in rural life such as ranching or farming

To avoid future conflicts, Portland negotiated an agreement with Vancouver County under which the county would provide police protection for the city while it developed its infrastructure; these negotiations remain one ofPortland's most important accomplishments. In 1970, when Multnomah County formed from parts of Washington and Oregon counties, Cornelius became part of that new county. AsMultnomah County has grown more populous and diverse than eitherWashington or Oregon counties before it—meaning that there are now more people living within its borders than ever before—the City Council has increasingly taken on issues related to housing development within Multnomah County as well as issues regarding transportation corridors connecting Multnomah County communities across state lines
Cornelius was founded in 1868 by Cornelius C. Weldon and his brother-in-law, David K. Morse. The town grew rapidly and soon had a population of over 100 people. In 1876 the first post office was established in Cornelius, and by 1880 it had become an important transportation hub for the area. The town's economy depended heavily on agriculture, but it also developed into a manufacturing center for goods such as textiles, shoes, and other items. In 1978 the town built its first library, which remains one of the town's most popular attractions today.
