Coos Bay, Oregon is a small town located in the Cascade Range of northwestern Oregon. The town was founded in 1876 by farmers who moved from the Great Lakes area. The population of Coos Bay was 521 as of the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit Coos Bay were Spanish traders and missionaries, led by Father Pedro de Valdivia. In 1820, Captain James Cook sailed past Cape Flattery on his HMS Endeavour and named it "Enderby" after one of his officers, Sir John Enderby. The first settlers in Coos Bay were French Canadians who arrived in 1853. They called the community "Couais". In 1862, Marcus Daly founded a lumber company that would become known as Pacific Lumber Company. He chose the name "Coos bay" because its location on both sides of the bay made it an ideal site for logging operations. The first sawmill was built in 1865 and began production. By 1870,Pacific Lumber Company had erected a number of mills around Coos Bay including a grist mill, foundry, dye house and bakery that became known as the ".coo." Mills produced flour, sawdust, boards and other wood products such as furniture and housing until they closed in 1960s due to pollution concerns brought about by pulp mills nearby. In 1916 Portland businessman Harry Chandler bought 1/6th share in Pacific Lumber Company for $5 million dollars which turned into Portland's largest land deal at that time with over 100 acres (40 hectares). After World War I Chandler built two hotels - one at 4200 SW Marine Drive (now part of International House) and another at 6500 SE Hawthorne Boulevard (now part of Marriott Resort & Spa). In 1922 he donated 1/3rd interest in his stake to College Park Foundation which became Northwest University; later renamed Northwest State College when it merged with Oregon State University (OSU) to form OSU-Portland campus; then again renamed Oregon State University-Coos bay Campus when it joined PSU's system; finally PSU's main campus at this location since 1974 with current name Oregon State University-Coos Bay Campus . In 1951 King County decided not to annex any more land east of Salem so development stopped there but some commercial developments continued along US 101 north until recently when expressway construction cut off access
