The first target holders were invented in Coos Bay, Oregon in the early 1800s.
Coos Bay is an unincorporated community in Douglas County, Oregon, United States. The community lies on the Pacific Ocean and includes most of the eastern portion of Coos Bay. The population was 561 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bend, Oregon Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Coos Bay were fur traders from California who came in 1807 and 1808. At that time, there was no large body of water between Coos Bay and the Suwako River which made it a logical spot for a port. In 1812, Captain John Cushing discovered oil seeps in what is now Gulf Oil Field and decided to explore this potential source of income by constructing a wharf onshore at Coos Bay. He also built a small town around this new port which he named "Cushingville." By 1830, however, Captain Cushing's project had failed to make much money due to lack of discovery or competition from other developers in the area. In 1850, mining began on nearby Mount Baker with results being disappointing so development moved onto land further east where some success was achieved but again problems arose with access to resources or transportation making these projects more expensive than necessary. By 1863 when gold became available in northern Oregon (), entrepreneurs once again tried to cash in on this new development by naming their new mines after hills near Portland (Gulf Refinery Mines & Smelting Company; Hillcrest Mines & Iron Works) or mountains near Salem (Saddleback Mountain Coal & Coke Company). Mining continued until about 1920 when demand for coal diminished as production increased for power plants and other industrial uses outside Oregon (). After World War II investments revived mining activity especially around Mount Baker where nickel smelting has been done since then () A post office was established at Coos Bay in 1856, but it closed six years later because there wasn't enough business traffic to warrant maintaining an office beyond delivery service only. A store opened at present day Coast Salish Village along Hastings Street in 1906 which served as both residence and store until 1949 when it burned down (). The first school open within town limits wasgradeschool #1 which operated from 1861-1867 before becoming co-ed #2 . In 1915 Villa Rica School District erected a building on present day Depot Road off US 101 past Coast Salish Village which served as their primary school until 1955 when they consolidated into Villa Rica Union High School (). In 1886, the United States Congress passed an act creating Multnomah County, Oregon. The county was named for Chief Multnomah of the Klamath Tribe. The early residents of Coos Bay were primarily farmers and fishermen. By 1915, there were over 1,000 people living in Coos Bay proper and nearby towns. The town of Seaside began to develop around 1930, following a decision by Pacific Gas & Electric Company to build a power plant onshore near present-day Seaside Park. During World War II,Coos Bay served as an major naval base for Allied forces during operations against Japan. After the war ended, many businesses closed down and downtown Seaside became largely inactive; however, some small businesses have continued to operate until today. Today’s economy in Coos Bay is dominated by two main industries: fishing and economic development associated with multibillion dollar companies like Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud Platform that callcoastline home . Some notable landmarks located within walking distance or just minutes away include President George Washington’s Mount Adams Country Estate (now part of Salem State University), City Hall Museum (which documents local history since 1906), SEAFORMS Naval Air Station Joint Base Lewis-McChord (where American Airlines once operated its Boeing 727 jets),[1]and several beaches including Islay Beach which is also popular with visitors due to its sandy shores and crystal clear water
In 1851, Coos Bay was part of the newly formed Oregon Territory. The town was founded by John C. Frémont and his party as they traveled from California to find a new route to the Pacific Ocean. The town quickly grew and soon became a major center for fur trade and settlement in what is now Oregon. In 1861, Coos Bay was renamed Salmon River after President Abraham Lincoln's proclamation naming American rivers for generals who had fought in the Union War. The town continued to grow until it reached its current size in 1910.
