The townsite that now makes up Coos Bay was laid out by Captain James Cook during his 1804 visit to what would become Oregon. At present day there are no remains of Cook's original ford but evidence can still be found from his surveys about two miles eastward on Hwy 101 where he crossed into British Columbia on May 14th 1797 while exploring what became Portland Territory

The first permanent European settlement was built by a group of American Missionaries in 1824 as part of their efforts to settle Oregon Territory. In 1847, a gold rush commenced in nearby Rogue River Canyon and began to change the character of Coos Bay. By 1850, most of the settlers had left for lack of gold or other potential riches. However, small communities continued to form until about 1880 when mining operations ceased and development waned due to competition from other areas in Oregon and elsewhere in America. It wasn't until 1986 that a new era for Coos Bay began when Pacific Northwest Airlines began operating service out of Portland's McClellan-King International Airport providing an influx of new people and businesses into what had been an agricultural community near Interstate 5. subsequent growth has led to more annexation by surrounding municipalities which have resulted in increased traffic congestion on I-5 as well as loss of open space around town center; however, it remains one of Oregon's fastest growing towns with over 9% annual growth rate according to 2016 Census estimates
The first Europeans to arrive in Oregon were the French in 1792. The British also explored and claimed the area, but no land was ever acquired. In 1847, the United States acquired Oregon from the British Empire when it purchased Alaska from Russia. The area then became part of newly formed California.
