They invited locals to help build their millrace dam across Hood Canal from where they could export logs downstream to ship downriver to Seattle and Tacoma. When word got out about this venture, people began moving into Coos Bay and by 1905 there were over 1,000 residents hereabouts – more than half who were farmers or fishermen working along the coast or aboard boats that transited Hood Canal or made their way upriver past Tillamook and Whatcom ports on Puget Sound before reachingsea level at Seattle or Tacoma. By 1910 there were 100 stores and 30 businesses; 80% were engaged in agriculture or fishing; 10% served as hotels/motels; 10% operated factories making munitions for World War I (and other wars). One result has been an increasingly cosmopolitan character among these coastal people – many grew up knowing someone else who had lived in Europe or Asia while others have married someone from elsewhere in North America (the percentage with foreign-born parents peaked at 50% in 1970). One prominent family has been ranching since coaling began operations off Clatsop Peninsula some time after 1880: The Larsons ran cattle until 1916 when they switched to soybeans instead because they found enough fertile land inland for farming without relying on subsidies from federal governments (heathside logging continued until 1949).
