Coos Bay is a town in, and the county seat of, Coos County, Oregon, United States. The population was 5,567 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Coast Range on the north coast of Oregon. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Coos Bay were Dutch fur traders working from Fort Vergaire (present-day Albany) in 1646. The area had been inhabited by the Klamath people for centuries before that. In 1821, U.S. Commodore David Dixon proposed that a post be established at Coos Bay to help protect American shipping against British pirates operating off the North Coast of America. A year later, Ulysses S. Grant approved the establishment of a post at Coos Bay and named it Fort George Vancouver after General George Washington's brother-in-law and mentor, Major James Douglas(). In 1825–26 Lieutenant George Vancouver sailed downriver to Anchor Cove on Rogue River with twenty men aboard his flagship HMS "Canary" to establish trading posts near present-day Brookings and Eureka while exploring newly discovered country along the coast of California and Oregon. He also explored Coos Bay looking for possible sites for a new post—the first permanent European settlement in what is now Oregon was made at Spanish Point (now part of Salem). On July 23, 1827 he anchored about three miles offshore from where today's town stands when he sighted land fit for habitation—a spit extending into Puget Sound about long; it appeared to be uninhabited because no dwellings or boats could be seen ashore or afloat anywhere within range of cannon fire! This site became known as Juan de Fuca Island after Viceroy José Herrera y la Torre who had visited it in 1792 during his explorations northwest of points Seattle and Portland.. On June 24, 1828 Captain Nicholas Cooke set out from Portland with two ships under his command: USS "Plymouth" (1810), commanded by Commander William Bainbridge; and USS "Crescent" (1838), commanded by Captain John Brownall (). Cooke chartered HMS "Dreadnought" () which arrived two weeks later just south of Juan de Fuca Island but did not explore it because its commander believed there were no seals living thereabouts worthy of capture or trade goods! Instead they sailed around Cape Disappointment () which they reached on July 6th followed by HMS "Eagle" (), captained by Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter RN., 10 days later reaching Juan de Fuca island again but finding nothing worth capturing! Cooke then sailed back around Cape Disappointment without ever having reached shore! The first Europeans to visit Coos Bay were the Spanish in 1792. The area was explored by Captain George Vancouver in 1794 and he named it "Coos Bay" after the bay where he had sighted a shipwreck. In 1810, Fort Clatsop was built on the beach at the mouth of Nisqually River, which served as a naval base for many years. It is also where John Cushing set up his home after leaving Oregon with his group of Mormons in 1824.
