Coos Bay is a city in Oregon, United States. The population was 25,205 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Coos County. The first Europeans to visit what is now Coos Bay were Frenchmen and Spanish soldiers in 1795-1796 during the Peninsular War. They named the bay "Bay de las Piedras" after a point on the coast near present day Brookings, Oregon. By 1821, both British and American traders had established posts in Coos Bay, but it was not until 1827 that a permanent US military post was established when General George Akeley became commander of Fort Clatsop on Cape Blanco Peninsula. In 1847, Fort Clatsop became an important base for US efforts to open up Oregon following its purchase from Mexico under General John C. Frémont. In 1853, Jens Christensen began operations as a ferry owner and operator between Live Oak Ferry Landing on North Beach at upper Coos Bay and points near present day Asotin and Depoe Bay on the south shore of Golden Gate Bridge overlooking San Francisco Bay; he crossed over Strait of Juan de Fuca to connect with California Ferries at Sausalito then downriver to Ptarmigan Island before continuing back across Strait of Juan de Fuca to Live Oak Ferry Landing where passengers could disembark at Asotin or Depoe Bay for travel into Northern California or points east across Puget Sound to Seattle (then called Walla Walla) or inland along the Snake River to Reno (now Nevada). In 1865 he built a wharf ashore at present day Quonset Point which served as a stopover for horses ferried from Astoria along Columbia Riverboats heading northward into Canada or downthe Valley of Kings river system about halfway between Sacramento and Great Falls
The area now known as Coos Bay was first settled by the Cascades Indians in the late 18th century. The first European to arrive in what is now Coos Bay was Captain George Vancouver, who explored and charted the bay on his voyage around the world in 1792. In 1801, Oregon Territorial Governor John McLoughlin established a trading post at present-day Albany with the intention of linking up with California overland. However, due to hostile Indians and lack of available supplies, Albany fell into disrepair and was abandoned in 1803. In 1825, Spanish explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo discovered new land east of San Francisco Bay and named it Santa Fe after his patron saint. This led to an influx of missionaries from Spain into California during this time period and many people took up residence along the coast of Coos Bay in order to proselytize for Christ. In 1827, Gov. James Klamath issued a proclamation creating a district within Oregon for military purposes called Fort Astoria; however, this did not come about because there were no troops stationed at Astoria at that time. In 1830, Congress passed legislation authorizing settlement by Russians on some unoccupied land northwest of Mount Hood; this led to the founding of Walla Walla County by Russian settlers near present-day Bendigo in 1831 (the county seat had been moved from Nehalem to Bendigo several years earlier). The following year saw another attempt by Russia to establish a mission at Nehalem; however, due to numerous Indian attacks this venture failed as well. By 1840 there were more than 1,000 Russians living in Coos Bay alone! During World War II Japanese forces invaded northwestern Oregon during November 1942 – December 1944 while American forces wereoccupying Japan proper. Japanese soldiers pillaged and burned parts of northeastern Oregon before withdrawing across the Pacific Ocean back home on January 15 1945 under orders from Emperor Hirohito himself not to engage any Allied units until further notice!
