The Coos Bay area was first settled in 1820 by Captain James Cook while on his third voyage of exploration to the Pacific Ocean. The town, founded by Capt. John Day and Lt. William Bligh, was located on the bay's southern coast at what is now called the mouth of the Coos River. After Oregon became a state in 1859, it decided to name its largest city after Captain Cook's home county-Coos County. Captain Cook had also named two smaller towns-Eugene and Corvallis-in his honor; both have since disappeared into history. The town of Coos Bay, however, remains as one of Oregon's oldest continuously inhabited communities and has been cited as one of the most beautiful areas in Oregon. The post office at Coos Bay was established on December 12, 1826; it continued in operation until February 14, 1903. At that time it was moved to Eugene and changed its name to that city. Bank (1831), Alder & Company (1835), State Bank of Oregon (1836-41), United States Land Trust Company (March 3, 1840) and First National Bank again (January 1, 1848). In 1865 Congress passed an act authorizing construction of a wharf at present day downtown Coos Bay for shipment of goods arriving from California via the Panama Canal; this wharf would later be used for cargo shipping through the Strait Of Juan de Fuca until 1976 when it closed down due to overloading from ships trying to cross that passage during high winds! In 1905 a new community was created near where Interstate 5 meets Umpqua Boulevard east of downtown Eugene known as Roseburg which began growing rapidly because of its location along Federal Way close to many universities includingOregon Agricultural College andOregon Health Sciences University making it one of the wealthiest areas in eastern Oregon! This area too eventually lost some popularity when Interstate 5 bypassed it becoming more important for transportation within eastern Oregon instead! However several small businesses continue operating today near I-5 outside Roseburg despite this change! Portland's growth spurt following World War II helped make Coos Bay something much sought after by commuters looking for cheap housing not only near major cities but also inland valleys such as Willamette Valley with their fertile soils ideal for farming purposes; these developments are still visible throughout much of downtown Eugene today although commerce has declined recently due largely to Portland's rise prices!!! Today there is evidence all along interstate 5 north/south between Roseburg/Eugene and Salematinlwest side that once large coopertowns once thrived hereabouts!!
In 1821, the town of Coos Bay was founded by George Allan and his wife, Abigail. The town became a post office in 1832, and a village in 1839. In 1865, the town was renamed Seaside after Rear Admiral John F. Halsey who helped found the United States Navy at Coos Bay on May 30th of that year. The city of Coos Bay was incorporated as a city on February 5th of 1905. On November 3rd of 1938, Hurricane Maria devastated the island and killed many people including many residents of Coos Bay; however,Coos Bay survived with few damages and only one injury reported from within the city limits.
