During the mid-19th century, Coos Bay saw significant growth due to its importance as an agricultural center. A number of large plantations were developed here; among these were those run by John Cockerill and Henry Ford Sr.. After World War II ended, many factories closed down inCoos Bay while others shifted their production plants southward into rural areas across Oregon. Today, much of Coos Bay remains agricultural with some notable exceptions such asFort Clatsop National Monument which has seen significant development over recent years including several million dollars worth of renovations
The first Europeans to visit the area were the Dutch in 1606. The first permanent English settlement was at Coos Bay in 1795. The town of Coos Bay was founded in 1827, and it grew rapidly with a population of over 200 people by 1836. In 1846, the United States took possession of Oregon from Great Britain, and Coos Bay became part of the new state. The town continued to grow until 1949 when it merged with Grants Pass to form the current city of Grants Pass.
