In Coos Bay, Oregon, there have been a number of shootings that took place with firearms. The first shooting in the city was on May 13th, 1892 when two men were shot and killed by a man named George Tilton while they were walking to get ice cream. In 1933, an employee at the local grocery store was shot and killed by another employee while he was changing out of his clothes. In 1949, a man named Clifford Fenton opened fire at the Coos Bay Chamber of Commerce killing four people before being shot and killed by police. On October 5th, 1997, two people were reported to be shooting handguns outside of a convenience store in the town of Gresham when one person fired shots into the air and then ran into another store. After this shooting occurred, law enforcement agencies began looking for a suspect who had fled the scene in a white car. On December 14th, 1997 an investigation revealed that 35-year old James Michael Hill had used a gun slingshot to shoot and kill his wife Colleen Burge outside their home in Salem County before driving away with their child. The following year on January 6th, 1998 two men were found dead inside their home after using gunslingers tactics to shoot each other multiple times near the house off Highway 84 south of Salem. On April 10th, 1999 three people died after fatally firing at each other from different rooftops near Bendigo during what is known as "The Riddle Shootout." This incident led to increased security measures around Bendigo as it became more apparent that these shootings could occasionally happen without anyone realizing it.

In 1805, Captain John McLoughlin discovered gold in what is now known as the McLoughlin Hills. The discovery led to a rush of people to stake out claims for themselves in what is today Coos Bay. By 1850, there were over 100 settlers living in Coos Bay. By 1875, only sixilers remained in the town. Today, Coos Bay is a thriving community full of culture and commerce. The town has a population of around 4500 residents and it has developed several businesses which include banks, restaurants, hotels and retail stores. There are also several schools located within walking distance of each other which help keepouth citizens connected and engaged with one another. Additionally, many cultural events take place throughout the year including arts festivals, music festivals and agricultural fairs which bring together locals from all walks of life to celebrate their local heritage.
The history of Coos Bay, Oregon begins with the arrival of Europeans in 1825. The area that is now Coos Bay was part of what was known as the Columbia River Valley, and early explorers were looking for a route to Asia. In 1828, Captain George Vancouver explored the bay and reported back that it had "a great deal of interest" because of its "prominence on both sides." In 1836, Congress passed an act authorizing Donation Land Claims in Oregon, and by 1840, most of present-day Oregon had been claimed. In 1841, a group of philanthropists led by John McLoughlin bought 640 acres (248 hectares) on the west bank of the Willamette River from Native Americans for $10 per acre (4 pesos per square meter). This land became known as McLoughlin Ranch. The first permanent settler in Coos Bay was James Kapp who arrived in 1847. He started a ferry service across the Willamette River to connect his ranch with town. Kapp's Ferry eventually became one of the largest businesses in town. In 1850, John Fetterman settled at anchor off shore near present-day McMinnville when he heard about goldfields lying under water near Siuslaw Mountain. Fetterman named his new settlement Fort Fetterman after himself and founded what would become one of Oregon's largest companies—the Portland Cement Company. Afterward Fort Fetterman gradually fell out of use as a trading post and instead developed into an agricultural center supplying local farmers with goods like flour, milk, eggs and lumber. A post office called Fort Fetterman was established in 1865 but it closed down soon afterward due to cost overruns from construction projects associated with General Sherman's march through Oregon during the American Civil War. By 1870, most people living around Fort Fetterman had moved away or died out so development along the river began again including mills that produced flour for local markets as well as mines located at Siuslaw Pass and nearby Mount Hood which yielded valuable minerals such as silver and gold over time
