The first Europeans to visit the area were the Dutch in 1621. They named it Cape Disappointment because they could not find a better place to land. The first permanent residents of Coos Bay were the Coast Salish people, who lived along the coast from Vancouver Island to Point Reyes National Seashore. In 1855, the United States acquired Oregon from Great Britain and set about developing it as a national territory. The town of Coos Bay was founded in 1858 when passengers on an American steamboat called the "Oregon" landed at what is now Yachats Beach.
