Coos Bay, Oregon is a town located in the U.S. state of Oregon. The population was 6,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salem-Keizer-Cedarburg metropolitan area. The town is named after Coos Bay on the coast of Washington County, Oregon. The first people to live in what is now Coos Bay were Native Americans who hunted and fished in the bay throughout history. The first European to visit Coos Bay was Captain James Cook on his HMS Endeavour in 1792, during his mapping expedition circumnavigating Australia and completing his Voyage of Discovery. He noted that "the headland called Point Townsend" extended into what is now Coos Bay and he named it after Sir John Franklin's ship HMS Erebus which had been lost at sea two years earlier off Cape Horn. In 1851, when Willamette Valley Railroad was built through central Oregon, parts of what are now Salem and Keizer were incorporated as a village called Allensworth, with a population of just under 100 people. In 1868, when Congress passed legislation authorizing states to establish new railroads within their borders, Allensworth became part of Salem because its boundaries lay within the newly created Oregon Territory adjacent to California; since then, Salem has always been an integral part of Greater Portland (Oregon). During World War II much of Coos Bay was used as an airbase by United StatesAAF Bomber Command and Navy Fighter Command during World War II operations against Japan; some remaining buildings still stand today as barracks for Base Air Force One pilots and attack helicopters taxiing out for takeoffs or landings at nearby Milne Island Airport (now Milne Memorial Airport). The Coos Bay area was settled by the descendants of the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1805. The first post office in the area was called Fort George, which was established on July 26, 1825. The town of Coos Bay was founded on February 14, 1853, and became a city on December 3, 1872.
