The history of Coos Bay, Oregon is long and varied. The community was first settled in the late 1800s, and saw a number of growth periods over the years. Today, Coos Bay is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Oregon, with its beautiful beaches, historical sites, and natural landscapes. One of the earliest settlers to Coos Bay was David McKay. He arrived in 1853 after trekking across what is now Northwest Territories from Canada. McKay built his first cabin in what is now downtown Coos Bay. In 1858, he founded the town of Colville on land that he purchased from Chief Joseph Klemperer. The town quickly grew into a thriving community thanks to its Friendly Fire Policy which protected locals from being forced to leave their homes by invading Native American groups. Over time, other pioneers also arrived in Coos Bay. In 1868, John Calfee came downriver from Portland and began operations at the wharf on present-day Cape Disappointment. By 1870, there were several stores and businesses in town including Foothills Provision Store & Hotel (now part of Gastown), Post office (1870-1901), Grange Hall (1888), Methodist church (1898), Masonic lodge (1899),and two schools – One for boys (grades 1-8) and One for girls (grades 9-12). By 1893, there were over 100 people living in Coos Bay proper with about 30 buildings – all connected by a series of dirt roads running through town center. A year later, coals were discovered near modern day Seaside Heights and development around them began immediately; this led to the nickname “Coosa County Coal Field” because so much coal was mined within sight of townspeople today! In 1902/03 when prohibition became law throughout America West®, many businessmen decided it would be an ideal place to open a brewery; thus COOS BAY BREWERY INCorporated was born! With new technology such as electric lights® we can see how important breweries have become not just during Prohibition but ever since! Many famous brands have been brewed here such as Budweiser®, Miller Brewing®, Anchor Steam®, etc.; but our favorite remains Revolution Ale®! The town of Coos Bay was founded in 1848 by Josiah Wedgwood and his wife Rebecca. It was named for the bay that separates Oregon from Washington. The first post office in Coos Bay was established in 1851. The town grew rapidly, and by 1870 it had a population of over 300 people. In 1876, Coos Bay became the site of the United States military supply depot at Fort Stevens. During World War I, Coos Bay played an important role as a naval base, and during the war its residents supplied troops with food and ammo. After the war, Coos Bay experienced rapid growth again, but by 1930 it had only 20 residents remaining. During the 1970s and 1980s, however, Coos Bay began to decline due to increasing competition from nearby towns such as Hingham and Seaside Heights. However, in recent years it has begun to rebound thanks to new development including a new shopping center and a new high school
