In 1885, a group of men from Coos Bay, Oregon set out to create the first firearm hat company in the United States. The company was called "Fenix." The Fenix Firearms Hat Company was founded on October 10th, 1885 by George H. Fenix and his brother Amos Fenix. They were the sons of Major General George H. Fenix and Anna (née Christensen). The Fenix firearms hat company produced hats for both civilians and military personnel. In 1886, they began producing rifles with regulation bandanas as part of their campaign to promote rifle shooting in America. They also created a pistol grip holster for use with shotguns and pistols. The Fenix Firearms Hat Company was acquired by John Sauer in 1912. However, the company continued production until it merged with Heinrich Hecht's Hecht & Co., Incorporated in 1934 to form AIG Defense Corporation. AIG Defense Corporation continued production of firearms hats until it merged with Dassault Aviation SA in 1986 to form Dassault-Aviation SA Ltd..

In 1916, the airport was opened by USAAF pilot Colonel Clifford Emmons with an airfield measuring only 2 acres (0.81 km²). At that time it was one of two airports serving Bend,Oregon; the other being Salem Airport which served Eugene and Portland until it closed in 1968 when Interstate 5was routed through that city. The airport closed again on 1 July 2003 when its runway became unusable due to maintenance work on I-5 southbound between Red Bluff and Brookings The modern era for Coos Bay begins with World War II when General Electric began manufacturing battleship turbines here from 1942-1945 at their new facility north of town.. The war ended with the end of hostilities but GE continued production until they retired from business in 1974 citing economical reasons then moved their operations back to Philadelphia where they remain today..
