Coos Bay is a town in Clatsop County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,527 at the 2010 census. Its name comes from the Coosa River. It is located on the Pacific Coast and is part of the Portland metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Coos Bay were Spanish explorers in 1542 who named it "Las Vegas" after their native village of Las Venturas on La Coma Island in California. In 1814, gold was discovered on the coast of California and soon afterwards people began traveling to find it. One group led by Captain John Cushing discovered a road leading to the bay in 1826 and named it Ebenesus after General James A. Kents forces that had found gold near San Francisco during the Mexican–American War (1846-1848). In 1847, Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote an essay about his experiences as an American soldier serving with General Fremont during his explorations of Oregon country east of The Dalles called "Athalie". He noted that he could see no end to this great plain until he arrived at a point some distance inland whereupon he perceived “a long range of low hills” rising abruptly out of “an extremely deep bay” or gulf—coincidently [sic] called Coos Bay; so richly did its surface glitter with alluvial lead particles that upon examination they seemed like small pieces of asteroids lying within a planetary body! This description would become Hawthornes[sic] most famous work,[1] although other writers before him had reported similar phenomena near present day Brookings, Oregon[2]. Captain Cushing's discovery established Oregon as a U.S.[3][4] boundary state between Mexico and America following the Mexican–American War; but not before locals had started calling their new land "Coos Bay." Aftermath of war forced many soldiers off-road into difficult terrain far from homes so much so that General James Kents ordered Captain Cushing's successor Commodore George Vancouver to explore more coastline east than newly acquired Washington Territory--resulting in Vancouver naming Ebenesus Strait for King George III rather than Admiral John Cushing Jr.. The first white settlers arrived around 1850 when wagon trains headed westward stopped at what's now Oak Harbor for supplies en route northward through what became Klondike Country; one settler went ashore onshore while exploring and claimed land southeast of what is now Coos Bay.[5][6][7][8] In 1861 local citizens voted to adopt a constitution which provided for township government and limited suffrage for men over 21 years old instead electoral voting being used until 1865 when women were allowed vote by law effective January 1st 1870 inclusive... By 1870 there were over 2,000 residents living within boundaries defined by square miles... With such wide open countryside came numerous animals including deer, bear, cougars (from Canada), wolves (Ursus arctos horribilis), horses (Equus caballus), cattle (Borzoi), pigs (Sus scrofa)… hardly any trees growing anywhere save along rivers or among cedar logs… except along Naches Canal where live oaks provide shade year round... Today only remnant evidence remains illustrating how different these days seem from when first settled here
