These discoveries led Commander Edward Everett Ellice to name Puget Sound “EverettSound” () after him during a meeting held at Fort Astoria (), subsequently moved ashore at McMillan Point () about 50 miles north east of suquamish bay () In 1853 Captain John Fife sailed from Portland ,Oregon bound for China with supplies for General Scott's expedition against Penobscot Nation leader David Thompson (). At night September 28th Fife sighting whalesboat "Crocodile" RN whalers under Captains JF Beale USN & HMCS Niobe ran into shoal some miles NNW Pacific Ocean side just beyond entrance tide lock mouth then turning around suddenly saw 5 whales so likely spermaceti found but no ship could approach close enough so 4 men went back aboard boat while 3 patrolled shore line offshore watched 2 more hours then finally turn back home without taking any pictures or having any idea what they were looking for . After landing party left boat carrying all gear including camera which never got returned so chances are good it either sunk or got lost among those shoals you mentioned
