Coos Bay, Oregon is a town and port located on the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The population was 23,552 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salem-Keizer-Bellingham Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Coos Bay" is derived from Tipu Sultan's use of Coos Bay as his base camp during his campaigns in 1792-93 against the United States during the Adams-Onis War. The first European to visit Coos Bay was Captain John Dallaire in 1810 when he charted its location and named it for Mount Tamalpais (now called Half Moon Hill). In 1824, two years after Captain Dallaire's visit, Lieutenant George Vancouver explored the area and named it "Bellingham." In 1840 Governor Phillip erected a wooden lighthouse at present day Point Defiance which served as an aid to navigation until 1957 when a new lighthouse was built at present day Quinault Headland. In 1850 Fort Clatsop was completed on land east of Present Day Point Defiance with cannons that still exist today; this fort served as temporary headquarters for General William Tilton during his campaign against Humboldt County settlers in 1853. In 1865 Portland businessman Alfred Purdy organized a group of businessmen who purchased land south of Cape Disappointment from Chief Joseph Kamehameha I for $1 million; this purchase set off what is now known as the Pioneer Era in Oregon history. The town started to grow rapidly around this time with many businesses opening up including grocery stores, hotels, lumberyards and other businesses catering to travelers seeking stability in times of economic uncertainty following Reconstruction. In recent decades, Coos Bay has seen growth in tourism as a result of its many interesting attractions including beaches, shipyards, museums, cliff dwellings, wineries, historical sites (such as Fort Kent), salmon fishing opportunities (at both salt water rivers and inland lakes),and small towns that have developed around it like Hastings or Walnut Creek.
