When the first people arrived in Central Point, Oregon, they were looking for a land to settle. They found it on the banks of the Willamette River. The river was important to them because it allowed them to trade goods with other people and make financial profits. The first European settlers in Central Point were French Canadians. They started trading goods with the local Indians and selling farm products from their plots of land. In 1853, a group of Americans came to Central Point and began trading goods with the Indian traders. One of these traders was John Cushing who built his store on First Street in 1854. This development helped spread Christianity among the Native Americans and made Central Point more likely to become a town. The town was founded on May 10, 1857 by James Houghton and others including George Waddell and others from Portland. The name “Central Point” was chosen because it is midway between Portland and Salem (the two largest cities in Oregon). After its founding, Central Point quickly became one of the most important towns in Oregon because of its location, commerce, and population growth. Its citizens developed many businesses that continue today such as Houghton-Lincoln Hardware Company (founded 1865), Ager Glass Works (founded 1870), Jansen Typewriter Factory (born 1881), Pacific Electric Railway locomotive factory (1892-1901), Western States Telephone Company (1898-1900), Cascade Brewery (opened 1914)and many more! One of the biggest things that Central Point did for Oregon was help develop agriculture into an important part of our state economy. Many farmers brought their crops overland from California during this time period so they could be stored away until winter weather improved so they could be grown again next season! Central Point, Oregon is a town located in the Columbia River Gorge region of Oregon. The population was 6,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bend, Oregon metropolitan area. The Central Point region has been inhabited by Native Americans for centuries and has been noted for its coniferous forests and high mountain peaks. Gold was found in theCentral Oregon Country in 1859, but it wasn't until 1861 that an American company named Central Pacific Railroad became interested in the area. In 1871, they started construction on the Central Pacific Railroad from Union Station to Corvallis and then south to Central Point. In 1875, work began on what would become known as "the first transcontinental railroad". The line ran from Bakersfield, California to Promontory Summit, Utah through Central Oregon. The first train reached Central Point on October 9th of that year. The town of Central Point quickly became an important center for transportation due to its close proximity to the railroads and easy access to water supplies. By 1907, there were over 100 businesses operating in central point with a population of over 4500 people. The most prominent business in town was the Lighthouse Depot which served as a stop along the railway line between Salem and Portland. During World War II, much effort went into making central point an important military base by building several airstrips and fortifications as well as providing housing for troops stationed here during wartime. Afterward, central point slowly lost its importance as a commercial center until recently when new development has taken place around it such as shopping malls and apartments buildings nearby
