The expansion of the Central Point Railroad began in 1884. In 1886, the Central Oregon and California Railway was established, and in 1889, the Oregon-California Railway was built. This company became part of the Union Pacific Railroad in 1901. The Central Oregon and Western Railroad was created in 1915 when the Eastern Oregon Railway went bankrupt.
Central Point is a town in Ashland County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Eugene–Springfield metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Central Point were farmers and their families who arrived around 1851. The townsite was named after the central point on Hood River where Portland and Salem were founded. A post office was established in 1865, and by 1874 it had become a small agricultural community with a few businesses. In 1876, the Northern Pacific Railroad came through Ashland County, completing its line from Portland to Vancouver (British Columbia). This caused construction of several large railroads in Oregon; Central Point became one of these communities as railroad companies laid tracks through its territory. By 1907, Central Point had about sixty residents and six businesses; it was still an agriculturalcommunity with only a few stores and services available for those living outside the town limits. However, during World War I Central Point played an important role as headquarters for the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) in France; many soldiers stationed there received training here before being sent off to fight on the Western Front. After the war ended, Central Point slowly started to grow again as people entered into farming or other new endeavors outside of town limits. Scope mounts are an obsolete military accessories that have been replaced by monopods and gimbal units. The original scope mount was a metal tripod with a variety of screw locations to attach the camera, ranging from small and accessible spaces near the camera body to more inaccessible corners and positions. One of the earliest commercial models was developed in 1913 by Edwin S. Porter for Sears & Roebuck, which became known as the Porter-Poolescope Mount. This design consisted of two parts: a base plate with four screws to hold the camera at a desired position on the tripod, and a sighting device that resembled a Wedgwood egg or some other object used to sight gunsights during World War I. In 1948, Russian engineer Nikolai Kornilov designed and built the first true "Gimbaled" scoped rifle using this same technology. The system relied on threaded barrels that were screwed into nautical rings around either side of an 8x42mm APO water droplet lens designated as "TV". A second TV lens could be attached directly onto this ring for additional magnification when needed; however, it is not clear exactly how this functioned. It is believed that television telescopic shots taken during World War II were captured with this type of rifle by Japanese forces using dummy footage provided by American pilots in order to identify enemy targets overflying Japan without being detected.
The history of expandable mounts goes back to the early 1800s when farmers in America started using horse-drawn wagons to transport goods. The United States Army built Fort Boise at Central Point in 1865, and the fort served as a base of operations for American forces during the Civil War. In 1870, Central Point became a city, and it hosted the world's first electric light show from an October 8th to October 12th period. In 1938, Central Point was renamed after Orson Welles because of his role as an executive producer of "The Mercury Theatre on the Radio."
