Central Point is a census-designated place (CDP) in Douglas County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. Central Point is part of the Portland metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Central Point were the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1804. In 1861, when Oregon became a state, Central Point was named for Headquarters of the newly created Union Pacific Railroad at central point on the Columbia River. By 1870, most of what is now Douglas County had been acquired by the railroad and development began as a result of its reach into that region. A post office was established at Central Point in 1872, and within five years there were also stores and hotels hereabouts. The town gradually grew larger until it reached its current size about 1900 following incorporation of much of Douglas County including portions of present-day Beaverton and Hillsboro Counties into CentralPoint Village Incorporation. By 1910 there were more than 100 businesses in town with over 3,000 residents; today central point has just over 1,000 residents but remains an important center for commerce and industry within Douglas County while providing excellent educational opportunities for its citizens. In 1913 Central Point attained city status due to annexation by Portland after voters approved a measure authorizing city formation under Oregon law as part of a campaign led by then-Mayor Emil Bodnar who said: "Portland should have nothing to do with these rural towns that are not contributing anything constructive to our community."
