Central Point, Oregon was founded in 1847 by the United States government as a military post to protect the Oregon Trail. The post became a major center for mining and farming in the area, and it eventually emerged as one of the most important cities in Multnomah County. Central Point is also home to many of the county's historical buildings, including the Central Pacific Railroad Depot and its associated train station. The city's history began with its location on a strategic point on the Oregon Trail. In 1847, when President James K. Polk ordered General George Armstrong Custer to attack Native Americans at Little Bighorn, Central Point was chosen as his final destination. At first, local officials didn't believe that Custer would actually reach Central Point alive; he was thought to be dead or captured after leading his army into battle against Indian forces near present-day Boise City. But when news arrived of Custer's victory at Little Bighorn, central planners realized that this key junction on the route could become an important hub for trade and transportation between pioneers and surrounding settlements. Accordingly, they decided to makeCentral Point their permanent capital. In 1849–1850, Central Point grew rapidly thanks to its new infrastructure: a flour mill, sawmill, bankrolling mines and lumberyards within walking distance of each other; dozens of housing units built around Market Street; and 4 miles (6 km) of railroad tracks connecting town with nearby mines and farms. By 1860, centralPoint had reached its peak population—almost 20 thousand people lived there—and boasted several churches (including Saints Peter & Paul), two banks (the First National Bank and Union Pacific Banking Company), three hotels (the Overland Hotel/Hospitals Building being specially designed for hosting visiting dignitaries such as Presidents Ulysses S. Grant and Lincoln), two schools (both public schools until 1906), four churches (SaintsPeter&Paul being particularly significant due to their location within easy walking distance of each other), five stores/markets (one store per block except along Market Street where there were only three stores available at any given time because of lack of rail connections), six businesses including seven livery stables/drivers' homes (), four factories (), twelve residences (), eleven mills (), eight storage sheds () ), ten wharves () []()], twenty-four miles (.24 km) long railway line (). As one historian has written: "No American city before or since has come so quickly into existence... [Central Points] may have been created primarily out of necessity but it quickly became both an economic power house[and] an international center." Ashes from Longview Dam started flowing into Multnomah River during dry years in 1889-90s which caused great water shortage especially during winter months when river level changes made navigation difficult . To ease water shortage situation some farmers started drying goods on roofs until summer rains came in order to collect rainwater which cleaned up streets then stored under roofs again during cold months .
