Central Point (named for the Central Pacific Railroad terminus) is a census-designated place located in Klamath County, Oregon, United States. The population was 914 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Siskiyou Mountains east of Corvallis and west of Medford. The community began as a small post office called Central Station on July 20, 1879, by A. H. Snyder and others who had founded the gulch town of Centralia on the same site two years earlier. In 1881, J. Leland Richardson opened a store there which became known as Richardson's Depot and continued to be conduct business until November 3, 1886 when it burned down due to an accidental fire in the depot stockroom. The first school in Central Point was built in 1881 by Edwin Davenport and used for grade school instruction until 1918 when it was replaced by Central School District No. 2 school which still operates today under that name. When Interstate 5 was being built through central Oregon in the early 1960s, builders increased traffic around Central Point so much that they decided to build a bypass around it using Route 26 instead of routing I-5 through town center like planned originally. This created some problems for residents because access to their homes from I-5 improved only somewhat while access from Route 26 remains quite poor today; one reason may be that many homes were destroyed during construction of I-5 and subsequent expressways in central Oregon
