In 1935, Central Point became part of Portland when it was moved from Multnomah County to Butte County under statehood legislation. The city limits were expanded to include all of Butte County in 1960; however, this annexation did not take effect until 1973 because Multnomah had been designated asPortland's metropolitan area since 1942 and its boundaries conflicted with those of Central Point.[1] The population density in 2010 was 10 people per square mile (4/km²). About 60% of residents are descended from pioneer families who arrived in Oregon before 1850; others have come since then including recent immigrants from Asia, Latin America, South Africa and Europe[2]. By 1881, however, Centralia had grown into one of the most influential towns in Oregon due to its location between two railway lines: The Union Pacific Railroad ran through town on its way north to Portland and the Southern Pacific Railway ran through town on its way south to San Francisco; both railways made it possible for people and goods to move quickly across these vast distances without having to take wagons or boats upriver. In 1907, Centralia merged with nearby Hillsboro into what would become known as Pioneer Town; this merger allowed Pioneer Town's citizens control over their own destiny and helped create an idea of communalism which persists today among many central point residents. In 1916, Enterprise Borough was formed out of portions of Pioneer Town and Hillsboro; this borough served as an administrative center for all local government activities until 1978 when central point voters approved splitting off Enterprise Borough into its own municipality under new governance principles known as "Voluntary Townhood." The original site of Portland had been abandoned by early 1846 after British forces burned down Fort Vancouver near present-day Pioneer Square while fighting American settlers in what was known as the Oregon War of 1812. In 1848, fur traders David McKay and John McLoughlin founded what would become CentralPoint with a land grant from then-Governor Lubbock based on their claim that they had discovered large reserves of gold near Mount Hood in present-day Oregon. The town quickly grew into one of the most important ports on the Northwest Coast due to its location on both sides of the Willamette River: downstream from Fort Clatsop and upstream from Salem (then part of Asotin County). Logging operations began here extensively during much of sustained growth throughout much of 19th century; later these same mills were used to produce agricultural products such as flour and cotton cargoes for export to Europe and Asia through Port Orford Bay.
