Central Point, Oregon is a town in Polk County, Oregon, United States. The population was 953 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salem metropolitan area. The central business district of Central Point is home to several banks and businesses including Wells Fargo & Co., American Express Company, and J.C. Penney's Department Store. In addition to its downtown core, Central Point has two active high school districts: the CentralPointe School District (formerly Central Valley High School) and the Roosevelt School District (formerly Corvallis High School). The first permanent settler in what is now Polk County was Ephraim Swayne who arrived in 1847 from Illinois. He named his new land "Central Point" after the headwaters of the Snake River which he saw from his property on Umpqua River west of present day Portland. A post office was established at Central Point on December 12, 1849, under the name Independence; it closed on July 1st of that year due to lack of customers. In 1861 Union Army General Lew Wallace invaded Oregon with an army composed mostly of Missourians seeking revenge for President Abraham Lincoln's successful reelection campaign against John Cranch III. After a series of skirmishes across central and eastern Oregon near Centralpointe Landing they converged at Gresham on February 17th but were not able to move beyond that point because there were too many trees obstructing their path eastward through forested country rich with minerals such as coal and gold veins that lay beneath the soil at this time On April Fool's Day 1862 General Wallace marched all night without food or water into what is today Polk County while supplies were beingprocured by boat downriver at Gresham overlooking present day Salem Fifty men made it safely out alive though most lost their right hand or foot as a result of dehydration caused by march and exposure over 100 miles over snow covered terrain
Central Point was a small town in Oregon until the late 1800s. It grew up around the Central Pacific Railroad and soon became an important stop on the train route. The town was also home to a number of businesses, including a mill, a store, and a post office. In the early 1900s, Central Point started to decline as it lost its importance to the railroad and other businesses. However, it continued to exist as a small community until the early 1960s when it completely disappeared from history.
