Central Point is a town in Benton County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro, OR-WA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Central Point was Captain John Drake on October 25, 1797 while exploring the Columbia River area. He named it "Centralia." In 1839 an early settler named George Stephenson established a trading post at Centralia after purchasing land from Chief Joseph Miles of the Yakima Nation. In 1847 Centralia became a nasional capital of Oregon and soon afterwards developed into one of the most important towns in that state. By 1860 it had a Mormon church and court house, two hotels and several stores. A large woolen mill built in 1865 east of town began producing yarn for export and also produced coal for local power plants until it closed in 1971. In 1871 Centralia was annexed byPortland as part of what would become Portland proper. The city's growth continued unabated through the decades until annexation spawned rapid development within its boundaries which has led to some confusion about where Central Point actually stands geographically within Portland proper (although with an approximate population size around 2,000 more than Central Point does). Today there are few reminders remaining of what once flourished here - instead much has been replaced or destroyed during this century including old homes/apartments now used as apartments or condos; businesses such as banks and grocery stores have moved out; main street has been completely rebuilt but still retains many historical buildings dating back to when people lived hereabouts; restaurants have taken up residence near Interstate 5 (and other commercial strips) making central point feel almost like a ghost town despite its current population numbering over 1,800 residents living inside its walls!
