Central Point is a town in the U.S. state of Oregon and it is located about 25 miles east of Portland on the Snake River. The population was 9,717 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro, OR Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Central Point was Captain John McLoughlin in 1802 when he was looking for a place where he could build an army should war break out with Russia. Central Point had then been called Fort Vancouver but it soon became known as Central Point because its location near Fort George barred other settlements from coming close and made it an ideal spot for a military post. The first residents were Native Americans who built their homes along the Snake River while they awaited instructions from their leaders on how to use this new land they had acquired. In 1864, after the American Civil War ended, Congress designated Oregon's eastern border as the line between United States and Canada; as a result, much of what is now central Oregon belonged to Canada until that state's annexation by the United States in 1907. The fortifications at what are now Central Point were also used during World War I as an airfield by American Expeditionary Forces flying bombers into enemy territory; these sites are still visible today across from downtown Central Point on US 101 . When General Joseph Lick Observatory opened near present day McMinnville in 1915, scientists sought out locations away from major population centers for their work because of lack of available land or space within those areas – something that has continued to be true throughout most aspects of astronomical research today at Lick Observatory outside Phoenix, Arizona . The post office at Central Point was established in 1881 and served until 1957 when it became part of Bendigo,Oregon . In 1951, Bendigo annexed Centralpoint making it one municipality within that city limits. By 1830 most of present day Oregon had been explored by Americans including Ulysses S. Grant who named it "Oregon" after General James Kowalchuk during his exploring trip in 1846-48 as part of effort to claim all California and Nevada for the United States. In 1851, A Foothill Road Company constructed a road from Corvallis to Central Point via Mount Hood which became known as State Route 30 (SR30). The company also built two dams across the Willamette River at Riski and Poindexter junction, forming Lake Oswego which served as an irrigation reservoir until 1922 when it was drained due to overuse by farmers and towns downstream. In 1923 SR30 was realigned east–west as Portland Avenue which ran through Central Point before terminating at SW First Street near Morrison Middle School today's site of Bockwallen Liquor Store & Bakery Ltd., now home to Powell’s Books & Music Center As early as 1886 Cattlemen’s National Bank had been established with $10,000 loan from J P Morgan In 1900 there were 11 businesses in Central Point with 3 saloons/restaurants, 2 blacksmiths/forge shops, 1 grocery store & bakery(Cascade), 1 post office(Lemmon), 2 hotels(Hilton Head Inn & Empress Hotel) and 5 schools: Lemmon School District #2 ( kindergarten thru 8th grade), Powell’s School District #1 ( 9th thru 12th grades), Halsey Elementary School District #5 (Kindergarten thru 8th grade), Salmon Falls Elementary School District #6 (9th thru 12th grades) At this time Central Point consisted mainly of farms with up to 50 head of livestock and several hundred acres corn crop . Only one business possessed electricity – Cascade Electric Cooperative – providing about 60 volts direct current only for lights and agricultural use . Businesses gradually adopted automobiles starting around 1920 until all but Cascade Electric Cooperative withdrew from service by 1925 The last business closed its doors in 1924 . That same year Laddie Wagon Works opened up producing wagons for local transportation such as postal cars
