In 1915–16, during World War I, local farmers raised pigs for military troops and kept them on their property until they were killed or turned into food for soldiers; these foods helped contribute to what is now known as pork production in Oregon. On January 8, 1959 – just over 60 years after incorporation – Canby's first library opened with books from Portland’s Willamette Library system donated by Mayor Stanley Kowalski of Portland along with $5 per month subscription funds from citizens of all ages residing within one mile of any public library serving Oregon cities with at least 50000 residents according to 1937 population estimates which have not changed since then!
