Stephenson developed a three-inch telescope that could be used for astronomical research. TheCarlisle Telescope was the first telescope to be built in Canby and it was dedicated on May 2, 1892. In 1916, J.D. Brewster obtained a government grant to build the first professional observatory in Oregon and he named it the Brewster Observatory at Canby after A.J. Carlisle's father-in-law, General George Armstrong Custer (1839-1925). The Brewster Observatory was an important resource for astronomy until its closure in 1979 due to budget cuts by the United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). After closedown of the Brewster Observatory, amateur astronomers took up the slack with their own telescopes which were built at various sites around town including The Park Schoolhouse on SW Third Avenue, Pioneer Hall on NW Fourth Avenue, and Western Union Building on SW Sixth Avenue between 1912 and 1932; these sites are now collectively known as "The Scopes Site". In 1951, Clyde Tombaugh became interested in space science and decided to build a large observatory on Mount Hood overlooking Portland harbor so he could study Marshae Hills located thereabouts near present day Hawthorne Boulevard/ SE Stark Street intersection during 1956 - 1957 seasons only because of lack of available land elsewhere within Portland limits suitable for such purposes; indeed this is one reason why Mount Hood had been treated as a national park throughout much of its history despite having no population growth or development associated with it since its inception as an undeveloped mountain more than forty years ago! Tombaugh's Observatories operated from 1961 through 1978 but ceased operations due to budgetary constraints brought about by changes in federal funding allocations among other things! In 1998 Congress approved appropriation under title V of Appropriations Act $1 million for renovation project at old Mount Hood Observatory site adjacent to Hawthorne Boulevard/SE Stark Street intersection which should eventually result in reopening of old observatory as well as new facility housing stately instrumentation!!

In 1962, when Multnomah County was created, Canby became one of its twelve townships. The town's population peaked at 11,362 in 1980 but has since declined by about 20 percent due to various factors including loss of jobs in Oregon's technology industry; annexation by nearby Oregon City; suburbanization along Interstate 5; changes within Multnomah County itself with more commuting intoPortland rather than into rural areas; and entrance into state government via annexation as part of Hillsboro Township without any vote or discussion from residents or elected officials
