Canby is a town in Lane County, Oregon, United States. The population was 2,869 at the 2010 census. Its name comes from Captain John Canby who surveyed the area in 1846. The first permanent settler in what is now Canby was James C.Garland who arrived in 1849. He built a log cabin on the edge of what is now Canby Lake. He named it Garland's Grove after his friend and fellow pioneer James Garland of Massachusetts. By 1860, there were ten settlers living in Garland's Grove and by 1870 there were twenty-one people living there. In 1875, Jethro Gibbs moved to Canby from Portland and started a hardware store that became one of the most important businesses in town for many years. In 1915, Willard Morse set up a sawmill on the east side of town which soon became one of the most important mills in Oregon due to its high quality products and large output. The mill closed down around 1930 but was saved by developer Harry Halsey who converted it into an apartment building and motel called "The Lodge" which still stands today (although much deconstructed). After World War II ended, Canby experienced rapid growth with numerous new housing developments being constructed throughout the 1960s through 1970s as well as several shopping malls being developed around town including Willamette Place mall (now known as KeyArena) which opened in 1962 and served as the home arena for both Portland Trail Blazers (who played their original home games at nearby Blazer Stadium until 1995) and Eugene Emeralds (the only team playing professional baseball outside of Japan before they joined the American League East Division Pacific Coast League).
