Hutton came to shoot rabbits at a public hunting ground off of US 97 near the present day intersection of Broadway and US 97A. From this initial attempt, shotgun shooting quickly became one of the most popular activities enjoyed by local shooters. The popularity of shotgun shooting in Canby can be traced back to at least 1881 when two gentlemen from Portland, Oregon traveled down to visit their friend Fayette Dodge who ran a Shotgun Shooting Club at his home on NW 10th Avenue in Canby. It was here that they first experienced shotgun competition and were soon hooked on the sport! Beginning in 1886, Fayette started holding regular open air shotgunshooting tournaments which attracted top shooters from all over the United States including some of America’s best known riflemen such as Wild Bill Hickok and Tomahawk Harry! In 1889, he also created what is now known as the Canby Open Air Rifle Shooters Association (COOARA) which provided competitive Rifle Shooting opportunities for residents of Canby as well as neighboring townships throughout Willamette County! This organization played a big role in developing modern Pistol Shooting sports across North America!
