Canby is a city in Oregon, United States. The population was 17,868 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Multnomah County. Canby is located on the Willamette River, about 20 miles (32 km) north of Portland and 40 miles (64 km) south of Seattle. The first Europeans to visit what is now Canby were fur seekers in 1843-44 looking for new land to hunt and trade with the Spokane Indian tribe. A post office was established in 1851, and within two years a store had opened on Main Street. In 1903, Canby became part of the newly created Multnomah County when it was organized from portions of Columbia County and Klickitat County. growth during World War I led to annexation by Portland in 1916; however, due to its location on the west bank of the river opposite flood Control Point No 2—a key military installation—Canby remained unincorporated throughout much of World War I. On July 1, 1922, Canby became part of Portland after a referendum vote by its citizens; as part of King's Valley Dam Project construction nearby Clackamas Townsite was annexed into Portland on November 15th 1923 via platting process without an election or public hearing only days before that date because all other areas within King's Valley had been annexed into Portland immediately prior thereto including parts of Canby itself! The annexation process resulted in both actions taking place simultaneously due toPortland's role as both governing body for Multnomah County as well as having authority over Clackamas Townsite which lay adjacent to their jurisdiction east–west along Interstate 5 between Beaverton and Salem

In 1847, John Condon traveled through Oregon and reported on the poverty and deprivation he found in upstate New York; this inspired him to start a relief effort for Native Americans living in what is now Oregon. A year later he organized a group of volunteers called "The Mission Indians" which began work clearing land for agriculture near present-day Salem. In 1849–1850, while working as an interpreter with The Mission Indians, James Kapp discovered saltpeter mines along what is now Highway 29 near present-day Canby. This discovery led Kapp and his partners to establish Kapp & Co., also known as Salt Lake Mining Company, which became one of the most important mineral companies in America during the late 19th century thanks to its involvement in multiple gold rushes throughout North America
